I wrote Out of the Dark a few years back and the words kept coming up for air these last few weeks. Pride is an important part of queer culture and I love that the school I used to go to (a catholic one no less) has a number of queer kids not only nailing it in class but openly proud in the playground. I want to believe that that’s every young questioning kid. I fear there’s still a ways to go before the freedom to be who you are is no longer a feeling you must fight with but a freedom you no longer have to fight for. Today marks the anniversary of the stonewall riots and the fight continues. And we need to keep fighting for our young. To any young kid out there in the midst of the party still struggling to allow yourself to be seen, I wrote this for you. Out of the Dark. Never forget. You’re Exceptional. You’re changing the game. And that’s why you came but take it easy on yourself. dB x
